Marseille, France (PortSEurope) September 14, 2017 – After years of bilateral negotiations between France and Morocco, ministerial visits and abortive attempts by shipowners, France’s CMA CGM will start a weekly ro-ro service between Marseille and Tanger Med next November.
A meeting of road hauliers should be held at the end of October under the auspices of TLF Méditerranée (industry association) and Association Française du Transport Routier International (Aftri) to present the practical details of the maritime line. Trailers shipped from Tangier could, as soon as they arrive Marseille, leave by train to Paris or Lille, said Marc Grolleau, president of Aftri.
Jean Roatta, deputy of the city of Marseille, said he was confident about the outcome of the project. “The head of the Moroccan government has been attentive and the Minister of Transport gave his approval a few weeks ago. I am optimistic about this cooperation,” Roatta added.
Since 2014, Christine Cabau Woehrel, the elected representative of the City of Marseille and the director of the GPMM (Grand Maritime Port of Marseille), has been working on this project.
In August 2014, they both invited the Minister of Transport of Morocco, Aziz Rabbah, to meet the Marseilles port community and to strengthen the ties between the two shores of the Mediterranean. Med Cross Lines Srl of Venice had previously looked at this route, but no progress was forthcoming.
