Tangier Med, a success story in support of the Moroccan port strategy
Africa's largest port, Tanger Med in Morocco has become one of the most important logistic platforms in the world in a decade. A positioning that is as much of its geographical location as its innovations in terms of dematerialization.
With its freight exchange, the famous port Tanger Med is once again talking about him after an eloquent growth in 2017. Launched last March, in partnership with the CGEM (the General Confederation of Enterprises of Morocco), it is intended primarily for professionals transport and logistics. Its goal is to connect actors using Tanger Med, namely shippers and carriers, to strengthen the logistical competitiveness of Moroccan exporters and enhance the attractiveness of its ports. "Tangier Med is a platform of choice for Moroccan exporters. It makes it possible to handle ro-ro traffic for exports of Moroccan products in the textile, leather, automotive, aerospace, electronics, horticulture and fresh products sectors "1, says Rachid Houari, Port Tanger Med director 1. The Tanger Med free zone, the largest in the entire African continent, is home to up to 800 active companies (including Renault and Peugeot).
Although the port has been growing steadily since its creation in 2007, it has nevertheless had to start modernizing its services in order to maintain the competitive advantage acquired. As Morocco faces a significant and worrying increase in the informal sector, the country's customs service is also called upon to be more vigilant.
Stemming the informal digital, a necessity for the CGEM
Morocco has been facing a disastrous informal sector increase for the past few years, accounting for only 20% of the country's GDP. The most affected sectors are, unsurprisingly, trade, construction and public works, as well as the food and textile industries. "The informal economy creates a shortfall for the state, impacts Moroccan businesses, end consumers and quality of employment," according to the Moroccan employers, the CGEM.
To attract and retain users, Tanger Med has decided to dematerialize part of its administrative procedures with a paperless goal by the end of 2018 (online customs declaration with electronic validation of the bank guarantee, electronic payment, etc.).
This approach is part of a process of dematerialization initiated by state actors anxious to contain the informal sector so harmful.
Thus, the ADII (Customs and Excise Tax Administration) is also increasingly active and rigorous in countering any form of commercial fraud. The latter is also engaged in a modern reform since 2017, supposed to last until 2021. An action that follows the deployment of several technological innovations, the BADR ("Automated Customs Network Network") to the marking system fiscal SAMID (for "Automated Integrated Customs Marking System"), developed in collaboration with the Swiss company SICPA, which is used in real time and remotely and is more relevant than ever in a context of recrudescence of fake and fraud. It provides the tax base for the Domestic Consumption Tax on beverages and tobacco products manufactured, imported or obtained locally.
Behind these cascading innovations, there is a man, Nabil Lakhdar, who is familiar with the customs administration for having worked for 17 years between 1998 and 2015. Currently Director General of the ADII since November 2017, he is also at the helm. origin of Badr online system. No doubt it will be able to bring new innovations within a strategy that aims to zero tolerance in the future and strengthen the strategic competitiveness of Moroccan ports.

La France reconnait la portée du port marocain de Tanger-Med
On the sidelines of the 3rd Morocco-France Parliamentary Forum, under the theme "The Morocco-France Partnership: African Perspectives", the French delegation visited the Tanger-Med port platform on Saturday.
For the first vice-president of the French Senate, Phillipe Dallier, Tangier Med is an impressive port, logistics and industrial hub.
Phillipe Dallier, who was part of a delegation of French senators who came to learn about the development of Morocco, also emphasized the potential for economic development that this brings with more than 800 companies operating in several sectors. which have created around 70,000 jobs.
The French senator also said he was "impressed" by the interconnection of the port with rail and road links, including the opening soon of the first high-speed rail line (LGV), stating that this is a "global project with an overall vision, which is likely to guarantee the success of the port".
For her part, the senator of Seine-Maritime in Normandy, Catherine Morin-Desailly, who has already visited the Tanger Med port in 2013, noted the progress and development in a few years of this Moroccan project, correlated at the installation of the TGV.
"We see how Morocco is investing in the future," she said, while appreciating the quality of the port facilities, and measuring the importance of the development of maritime traffic. "Leveraging high quality infrastructure to enable good freight traffic is really great and encouraging," said the senator.
Tanger Med is a global logistics hub, located on the Strait of Gibraltar, offering processing capabilities for 9 million containers, 7 million passengers, 700,000 trucks and 1 million vehicles.
The port Tanger Med, which serves 174 ports in the world, has experienced a strong expansion of maritime traffic since its commissioning in 2007. It should be noted that the capacity of the port will be further strengthened with the extension of Tanger Med II which will be operational soon.

Ticket are rising significantly at the beginning of the MARHABA campaign
The prices generally vary according to the affluence with promotional rates in low season (winter and spring, outside the Easter and the end of the year). These prices include, generally, an offer with a package per vehicle regardless of the number of passengers. But according to a travel agent, this offer has not been put in place since last summer.
Which means that the companies have maintained their prices even in the low season. On another note, the average prices practiced at the beginning of June have increased considerably compared to the same period last year, nearly 20% on average according to port sources. For a vehicle and its driver, the average price increased from 2,000 to 2,400 DH for a return ticket on the TangerMed-Algeciras line.
Note that on this line, the competition is in full swing with three Spanish companies and two Moroccan, but still, the rates remain high.
For a group of two adults and two children in a car, it costs on average around 4.400 DH round trip.
If we refer to the rates posted on the web by the various companies, the range goes from 4.213 DH for Intershipping to 4.770 DH for FRS, passing by 4.642 DH for Trasmediterranea and 4.290 DH for Balearia and AML, tariffs that risk strong to vary in periods of high affluence.
But as for mobile operators, the rates are not clear at first glance with reservation platforms that look very similar (especially for Spanish companies) to those of airlines.
Some companies are inspired by this pricing, such as AML which chooses to adjust its rates according to busy periods, in August for example, while others prefer a stable pricing as is the case for FRS.
At the Strait, competition and alternatives are not lacking, especially on the air side. The proliferation of low-cost routes on the roads used by MREs encourages them, especially younger ones, to fly instead of a long car trip.
Even with a baggage surcharge, fares may be in favor of the plane, especially if booked in advance. The other competitor is the line Algésiras-Sebta where the posted tariffs are lower by 30%, but without the comfort of landing in Moroccan territory with the police formalities settled on the boat, an exclusivity of the Moroccan ports.
Where the Strait appears to have made progress is in the price agreement. A few years ago, the companies had no remorse for displaying prices very close, a practice inherited from the history of shipping between the two sides of the Straits when shipping companies worked in a pool, a kind of trust.
These practices have led them to be sued by the Spanish authorities for anti-competitive practices and fines of several tens of millions of DH in 2010. Since then, things have changed and practices have evolved as well as the actors, especially the Moroccan side.
Tangier Med shares its expertise in Marrakech
The high mass of logistic actors, organized in Marrakech from 9 to 11 May 2018, has kept all its promises.
More than a hundred national and international heavyweight operators such as Tanger Med, Timar, or Michelin have been present at this 7th edition of the Logismed Exhibition organized jointly with the 24th edition of the International Logistics Congress - Eurolog 2018. For three In a row, logisticians have debated the new challenges facing the logistics sector and the new opportunities that lie ahead. From the role of the new technologies, until the installation of adequate infrastructures, while passing by the new axes of competitiveness, no subject was dodged. "Morocco is determined to continue the positive transformation of the logistics sector, in particular to confirm its vocation as a logistics hub and bridge between the African and European continents," said the head of government, Saâdeddine El Othmani, in his inaugural address. On the side of the participants, everyone has welcomed the major advances made by the Kingdom in recent years. It must be emphasized that Morocco has today become a truly world-class logistics hub, thanks to the quality of its infrastructure, notably the Tanger Med platform. Open to global trade and connected to 174 ports worldwide, Tanger Med offers processing capacity for 9 million containers, transit of 7 million passengers and 700,000 TIR trucks, and the export of one million vehicles. "The participation of Tangier Med in this show, allowed us to present our offer in its entirety. Every opportunity is good to present a facet of the system put in place to support the competitiveness of domestic companies for export, but also for imports, "said Hassan Abkari, Director Port Tangier Med passengers and ro-ro. Remember that this is the first time that the Eurolog international fair is held outside the European continent, thus establishing the status of Morocco as a locomotive of logistics at the regional level. And, Tangier Med has been well represented both at the plenary sessions and at the numerous workshops where several group leaders shared the know-how and expertise developed in recent years in this area.
Tanger Med, a global logistics hub
"Tangier Med is in a strategic area. This port logistics platform required a significant investment. If groups like Renault and Peugeot have chosen Morocco, it is also because its logistics are well developed. We have been living for a few years, a significant advance in logistics, "said Rachid Houari, director Port Tanger Med 1 and also CEO of Medhub, who was speaking at the first panel of this meeting of logisticians. It must be said that thanks to Tangier Med, Morocco is now one of the world's top 20 most connected countries. Located on the Strait of Gibraltar (the second crossing point of world trade at the crossroads of major maritime routes East / West and North / South), Tanger Med serves as a natural transhipment hub for global logistics flows. In terms, the platform handled 51 million tons of goods in 2017. Similarly, 88 billion dirhams of Moroccan products were exported. Its effectiveness has attracted several hundred companies. Today, the free zone of Tanger Med (recognized first free zone in Africa by the Financial Time) hosts 800 companies in activity, which achieved in 2012 an export turnover of 72 billion DH in various sectors such as automotive, aerospace, logistics, renewable energy, textiles and trade. Recall that in terms of infrastructure, the port complex is 1000 hectares composed of 3 ports (Port Tanger Med 1, Port Passengers and Rovers and Port Tanger Med 2) and the industrial platform, meanwhile, is 1,600 hectares composed of six zones of activities. This allows Tangier Med to offer a range of complete offer. In this sense, a new zone dedicated to export "Export Access" of 19 ha is set up for the treatment of export flows with a processing capacity of 2100 units per day and an average transit time of 2 hours. "Tangier Med is a platform of choice for Moroccan exporters. It makes it possible to handle ro-ro traffic for exports of Moroccan products in the textile, leather, automotive, aeronautics, electronics, horticulture and fresh products sectors, "adds the top management. In order to boost its performance even further, Tanger Med has started a major digitalization project. In this regard, the platform has set up, in partnership with the CGEM, a freight exchange for professionals

Tanger Med seeks to expand facilities, limit congestion
Tanger med port handled some 51 million tonnes of cargo. The Moroccan port offer on the Mediterranean will be enriched in 2021 with a second logistics platform, called Nador West Med.
This new port will have a capacity of 3 million TEUs, expandable to 5 million. The infrastructure will also handle 25 million tonnes of hydrocarbons, 7 million tonnes of coal and 3 million tonnes of general cargo annually.
This new port will have a capacity of 3 million TEUs, expandable to 5 million. The infrastructure will also handle 25 million tonnes of hydrocarbons, 7 million tonnes of coal and 3 million tonnes of general cargo annually.
It will also serve to complete the offer of the port of Tangier Med, whose terminals are currently running at full capacity. Indeed, in front of their local and regional competitors, the authorities of Tanger Med do not stop setting the bar even higher. In the first quarter of 2018, the Moroccan port posted positive results for most of its activities, “despite the exceptionally bad weather,” says the port management.
Container traffic increased by 3% to 788,774 TEU handled at both the TC1 and TC2 terminals. Growth is certainly timid, but partly due to the saturation of the Tanger Med I wharves, while the entry into service of Tanger Med II, the extension project, is not planned until 2019.
Ro-ro traffic shows a better growth rate, of 12%, and some 90,000 trucks handled during the first quarter. This performance is explained by the fact that the truck remains the preferred means of transport for Moroccan exporters and its use is benefiting from the development of new export sectors, particularly in the automotive industry.
For the passenger activity, the eight berths on 35 hectares had a 12% decrease in traffic compared to the first quarter of 2017, for a total of 373,343 passengers.
Behind this poor performance are the poor weather conditions marked by strong winds and heavy rains, which slowed the rate of maritime connections between the two shores of the Mediterranean. In contrast to passenger traffic, vehicle traffic grew by 24%, one of the largest rises in the first quarter.
In all, 110,756 vehicles were handled during this period at the two port terminals. In addition, there were 90,179 units handled at the Renault terminal, of which 71,823 came from the Renault plant in Tangiers and intended for export. The transhipment of vehicles handled in the Common User Vehicle terminal reached 19,905 units.
