Vigo launched a Motorway of the Sea (MoS) to Morocco’s Tanger Med in April 2017. The statistics for last year shows that Morocco is the second foreign country with which a greater flow of cargo traffic was established. Only France exceeds it, a destination that in 2017 displaced more tonnes even than Spain.
Last year, coinciding with the new regular line to the North African country, Vigo port handled 178,182 tonnes with Morocco, more than the link with China, Turkey and the United States, foreign nations that in recent years registered a greater volume of traffic than Morocco.
In 2016, Tanger Med was the fifth client of Vigo port and in 2010 it was not even in its “Top 10”. The upturn in Morocco contrasts with the fall suffered by traffic with Chinese ports (-17%), USA (-11%) and Turkey (-6%).
Although the evolution of Morocco is more or less ascending for years, in 2017, after the opening of the new line, it gained 24,100 tonnes, which represents a rebound of almost 16%. Since 2010 the cargo traffic has even doubled. Then the port handled less than 92,200 tonnes with Morocco, versus almost 178,200 tonnes last year.
Morocco is basically a destination country for traffic. Of the total cargo that moved between Vigo and the African country, 84% are products exported from Spain.
